Baratti gulf is one of the most loved places by tourists and locals.
Maritime pines and green meadows, extended almost to the beach, turn this spot ideal for picnics, walks and relaxing moments during whole year. The sandy shore is horseshoe shaped and the sea bed shallow; different colors of sand – amber, gold, dark – give evidence of metal extraction in this area during Etruscan period.
Baratti and Populonia have to be mentioned together. Populonia ist the only Etruscan town situated by the sea. Today its a fortified town on the promontory, rebuilt in the XV century. Populonia is an absolute must! – not only for the evidence of Etruscan civilization but also for the paramount view from the fort that dominates the splendid Baratti gulf.
